That means no flame, no soot on the jar, no wax tunnelling down the middle, and a candle that burns through evenly and lasts considerably longer than it would if you lit it.

It also solves the problem of the last third of a candle, the part that sits below the reach of a match and usually gets thrown away. A warmer melts the surface from the top down regardless of how low the jar has gone, so the candle is used to the bottom. Over a few candles that difference adds up to real money.
